Male partners account for approximately 1/3 of infertility cases. We define infertility as the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. Several methods can test male fertility. Read how The Fertility Clinic diagnoses male infertility.
Semen Analysis During a routine test, we advise patients to collect sperm in a sterile container after abstaining from sexual activity for 3-4 days. If there has been recent ejaculation, the sperm count can below. If ejaculation has not occurred for some time then there may be too many dead sperm. We examine the semen for quantity, number, motility, and appearance. Results can vary from test to test in the same person and sometimes it may be necessary to repeat the semen analysis.
Varicocele The presence of dilated veins around the testicles can sometimes cause infertility. The correction of varicocele is a minor procedure and can improve blood flow around the testicles thereby sometimes improving semen quality.
Retrieval of Sperm Sometimes a male may have very little or no sperms in the ejaculate. However, with a simple procedure performed by the urologist sperms can be retrieved using PESA and TESA techniques.
