Kidney Tumor

Descriptions

A Kidney Tumor, also known as a Renal Mass, is an abnormal growth of tissue that forms on or within the kidney. These growths can be either:

  • Benign (Non-Cancerous): These growths will not spread to other parts of the body, though they may still require monitoring or removal if they grow large.
  • Malignant (Cancerous): These are commonly referred to as Kidney Cancer (most often Renal Cell Carcinoma or RCC). These tumors can grow quickly and may spread (metastasize) to other organs.

Many kidney tumors are discovered by chance during scans (ultrasound, CT, or MRI) performed for unrelated health issues, often before symptoms appear.

Common Symptoms:
Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of most kidney tumors is unknown, but certain factors significantly increase a person’s risk:

Primary Risk Factor

Details

Smoking

The risk increases with the duration and amount of smoking.

Obesity

Excess body weight is linked to hormonal changes that may increase risk.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Having high blood pressure increases the risk, even if managed with medication.

Advanced Kidney Disease

Especially for patients on long-term dialysis.

Family History/Genetics

Having a close relative (sibling or parent) with kidney cancer, or inheriting specific genetic conditions (e.g., von Hippel-Lindau disease).

Occupational Exposure

Regular exposure to certain chemicals (like trichloroethylene) in the workplace.

Age and Gender

More common in men and individuals aged 65 or older.

Treatment Options

Treatment for a kidney tumor depends heavily on its size, location, whether it is benign or malignant, and if the cancer has spread (stage). A Urologist or Oncologist will determine the best approach.

Primary Treatment Approaches:

Treatment TypeDescriptionFor Whom It Is Used
Active SurveillanceClosely monitoring small, slow growing tumors (especially benign ones or small malignant ones in elderly/frail patients) with regular imaging scans.Small, low risk tumors, or patients with high surgical risk.
Surgery (Nephrectomy)Partial Nephrectomy: Removing only the tumor and a small margin of healthy tissue, sparing the rest of the kidney. This is often preferred for smaller tumors. Radical Nephrectomy: Removing the entire kidney, surrounding fat, and sometimes the adrenal gland. Most localized tumors that require removal.
Thermal AblationUsing small needles guided by imaging to either freeze (Cryoablation) or heat (Radiofrequency Ablation) the tumor, killing the cancer cells.Smaller tumors, or patients who cannot undergo surgery.
Systemic TherapyTargeted Therapy and Immunotherapy drugs that travel through the bloodstream to attack cancer cells throughout the body. These are often used in advanced stages.Tumors that have spread outside the kidney (metastatic disease).
